Is Youtube going to replace the television set???

In a not-so shocking revelation Youtube has announced that it enjoys more than a billion page views a day. That makes out for about 11,574 page views per second which means Youtube serves up about a million page views about every 90 seconds. Now that is a baffling number. Isn’t it incredible that a website with an infinite number of videos enjoys so much attention from a worldwide audience?
It is also disheartening that people spend so much time watching, sharing and uploading videos when they have no time for themselves. Majority of the time is being eaten up by their work and the little amount left is consumed (unfortunately) by incessant e-mails, text messages, Facebook updates, tweets and of course Youtube videos.
Youtube CEO and co-founder Chad Hurley wrote “This is great moment in our short history. Clip Culture is here to stay.” He agrees that it’s a trend to upload and share videos and indeed an important one in the internet infrastructure industry. There is no doubt about the popularity of the medium or the status it enjoys amongst a global audience, but the question remains: “Is Youtube going to replace the famed Television sets?”
There is something noteworthy in this whole discussion. It is also of importance that whether the numbers are widely exaggerated or they are actual numbers? There is no check mechanism in place to decide whether the claims made by Hurley are true to the core or not? This might be true and exact but we are not sure yet. Time will bear testimony to the fact and we will wait to see how it works.

‘The Journo Brigade’

Journalism enjoys a special reception wherever it goes, whether it is the households, the public sphere, a social gathering or a public mutation. Journalists, especially the ones in Delhi have a very amusing way of presenting themselves to the general public. They show no signs of empathy while talking to somebody who is already so victimized and display shocking antics. They take it for granted that being a journalist guarantees ‘special rights’ and freedoms which can be exploited to no end.

There have been many instances when journos have been found hanging out with a story. There is a literal explanation to this: When a journalist (usually the budding type) is handed a story to follow, he frowns at the prospect of going all the way to the other end of city, then coaxes himself to go, frames a questionnaire and reaches the spot. On reaching there, he suddenly realizes that he faces a stiff competition from his peers and transforms into this hyper-active over-enthusiastic curious human being who is ready to trade his mind to get some wacky answers. There might be exceptions to this rule, but those are very rare mind you.
This kind of behavior is mostly found in those working in tabloids spread across the whole yard. Tabloids, is another subject that requires daft attention. Someone would think they exist to thrive on the free food and drinks available in page3 parties. But that is just one characteristic. When we talk of tabloids how can we forget Mid Day?

Yes, Mid Day is what made the word ‘tabloid’ famous with us. It has just dawned on me that Mid day is celebrating its anniversary with an issue of over 200 pages. It makes all of us wonder what is a newspaper got to do with that count? The reason is the number of advertisers it roped in for the special issue. There is no doubt about the fact that many first-time advertisers were also roped in, which made it all look like something gone over-the-top!

With this anniversary issue celebrated and gone, there is a wish that our papers & tabloids get a reality check and dwell deep into themselves and give us news stories worth reading and evaluating.

Are we a society of chauvinists?

Looking at the trends and going by the rave reviews, the answer comes out to be ‘YES’. We are a society of chauvinists. A society of super-hyper-aggressive males who tend to raise their eyebrows and their hands when necessary. We are a country full of people who have a double-sided take on everything depending on the subject, if or not he is a male or she is a ‘petty’ female.
To substantiate on this account we have hordes of examples that do the rounds of our TV sets and daily papers. We have seen numerous advertisements featuring the ‘urban macho male’ who saves the day. We have also seen the hardworking typical middle-class housewife who is washing clothes in one commercial and kitchen cabinets in another. It’s just recently that we are looking at our TV screens in awe of those women who push an ambulance stuck in mud. Or the women swooshing away in their SUVs. Or those heading a big enterprise.
It is time we ask ourselves how do we feel when we come face to face to such ostensibly smart and successful women? The answer is going to be a mixed reaction. We, the people of our country have differing perceptions towards women. Either we devour them or loathe them. There are no opinions that are neutral in nature. We are stuck in a phase where we cannot decide whether we love to see women in power or not.
Let’s just wait for a time to come where we can see unanimous display of power amongst both men and women. We need more advertisements where none of them is leading and both equally enjoy the attention. Advertisements have a range of repercussions and they can lead to a positive as well as negative outlook. We tend to neglect the positive nitty-gritty’s. This is to a better understanding and outlook towards both the genders.
